French architect Jean Nouvel, creator of the Porto Senso project, became the laureate of the world’s most prestigious architecture award - Pritzker Architecture Prize. The formal ceremony will be held on June 2 in Washington, where a USD 100.000 grant and the honorary prize will be bestowed on the architect. According to Thomas Pritzker, chairman of The Hyatt Foundation, Nouvel was awarded for “a courageous search of new ideas and aspiration to expand borders of architecture, and challenge of accepted norms." In Nouvel’s own words his works are called to reflect “the modernity of our epoch expressed in rethinking of historical values”. The most known Novel’s work is The Institute of the Arabian World (Institute du Monde Arabe) in Paris, opened in 1987. This building is remarkable for skilful use of natural light. The façade - area of two thousand square meters, is made of glass and operated metal diaphragms which are connected to photo cells, closed and opened depending on intensity of sunlight. The premium was established in 1979 by the owner of a network of The Hyatt hotels and was planned to become “a Nobel of architecture”, because there was no Nobel nomination for architecture. Such well-known architects, as Norman Foster, Zaha Hadid and Rem Kolhas became laureates of Pritzker Prize in different years.
